About the Honorees


Alberta Arthurs

Alberta Arthurs is a consultant and commentator in the fields of culture, philanthropy, and higher education. As a Senior Fellow at the John Brademas Center of New York University, she advises on international cultural activities. For over a decade, she was Director for Arts and Humanities at the Rockefeller Foundation and, prior to that position, served as President and Professor of English at Chatham College (now Chatham University) in Pittsburgh. She has been Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and Acting Dean of Freshmen at Harvard College and Dean of Admissions, Financial Aid and Women’s Education at Radcliffe College. She has taught English literature at Harvard and has taught and held chairmanship and deanship positions at Rutgers University and Tufts University.

Joan D. Firestone

Joan D. Firestone is a familiar figure in New York’s cultural community and a fierce advocate for social justice, the arts and gender equity. She is currently the Chair of the board for En Garde Arts. She’s held executive and policy level positions in the for-profit and government sectors, including: Assistant Director, NYSCA; Director of Economic Development and Cultural Adviser to the NYC Comptroller; Executive Director, Flushing Meadows Park Corporation; Special Advisor for the Arts to Chancellor of the NYC Board of Education; and Executive Director of The Moth. She has also served as co-president of the League of Professional Theatre Women and Vice-President of Government Affairs for the New York Women’s Agenda.
