A newly formed partnership between En Garde Arts, The Commons Café and the listener owned radio station WBAI will begin on January 7th at 7:30 pm with Down the Rabbit Hole performed by award-winning author and performance artist Liza Jessie Peterson.

Liza Jessie Peterson has been working with incarcerated populations for over two decades. Her critically acclaimed one woman show, The Peculiar Patriot was called “A powerful indictment of racial justice” by The Boston Globe.  It premiered at The National Black Theater in Harlem for two separate runs, was nominated for three Audelco Awards and had a successful sold out run at Arts Emerson in Boston   Five stars from Time Out.

Down The Rabbit Hole is the story of Liza Jessie Peterson’s journey into the prison system. How did this starry-eyed actress tumble down the rabbit hole of mass incarceration and find great purpose teaching incarcerated teenagers at Rikers Island while fighting to keep her dream of being an artist alive? A funny thing happens when purpose meets passion in prison and this artist has the hilarious and harrowing recipe for a wonderful show. With striking clarity, sharp humor and heart-felt insight, Liza’s journey unfolds as her depth of inquiry reveals a shockingly entrenched system unique to the USA.
